Voice of the Client

“I’ve been driving a long time, and most companies talk about safety and numbers. This was the first time I felt like someone was paying attention to my health. The coaching helped me prepare for my DOT physical without stress, and I made changes I can actually stick with on the road. It made me feel like I matter here — not just my miles.”

The Challenge

The CRST Dedicated Caterpillar fleet was already operationally strong and stable. Leadership had built a culture of accountability, consistency, and performance. But the question wasn’t “How do we fix something broken?” — it was:

How do we help a healthy operation continue to thrive?

In the transportation industry, driver wellness is a known risk factor affecting safety, retention, and long-term sustainability.

Industry data shows:

  • Nearly 70% of long-haul truck drivers are classified as obese, compared to about 42% of U.S. adults overall.

  • Truck drivers experience significantly higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, and sleep apnea than the national average.

  • The sedentary nature of the work, irregular sleep cycles, limited access to healthy food, and long hours contribute to increased long-term health risks.

For CRST leadership, investing in wellness wasn’t reactive — it was strategic.

The goal:
Support drivers proactively so they could perform safely, sustainably, and confidently for the long haul.

Strategic Approach

CRST partnered with Rolling Strong, a provider specializing in transportation-focused wellness programming, to implement a comprehensive health initiative for approximately 200 drivers within the dedicated fleet.

The program included:

🔹 Personalized Wellness Coaching
Drivers received structured coaching support tailored to their lifestyle and work demands.

🔹 Health Tracking & Accountability
Participants tracked progress across key health indicators, creating visibility and momentum.

🔹 DOT Physical Preparation Support
Drivers were guided in preparing for Department of Transportation physicals — reducing anxiety, improving readiness, and minimizing unexpected disqualifications.

🔹 Ongoing Encouragement & Education
Resources were designed specifically for drivers — realistic, road-friendly, and practical.

Rather than offering generic wellness advice, the initiative respected the realities of fleet life and met drivers where they were.

The Experience

This program shifted wellness from a private struggle to a shared investment.

Drivers experienced:

  • Increased awareness of their health markers

  • Practical tools they could apply while on the road

  • A sense that leadership genuinely cared about their longevity and safety

  • Support without judgment

Instead of feeling like compliance, the program felt like partnership.

Results & Impact

The outcomes were both cultural and operational:

🚛 Improved Driver Morale & Engagement
Drivers reported feeling more supported and valued beyond their productivity.

📉 Reduced Health-Related Claims
Improved preventative health awareness contributed to fewer medical-related disruptions.

🔁 Increased Retention
Drivers were more likely to remain engaged in a fleet that demonstrated tangible investment in their well-being.

🛡 Strengthened Safety & Sustainability
Healthier drivers are safer drivers. The initiative reinforced CRST’s long-term commitment to excellence, safety, and human-centered leadership.
