Redefining success beyond achievement

Overview

In March 2026, Fifth Season Consulting was invited as a guest speaker for Iowa State University’s Collegiate Women in Business group, delivering a workshop titled “Redefining Success: Self-Worth Beyond the Checklist.”

The session focused on helping students rethink traditional definitions of success and build a more sustainable, values-driven approach to their careers and well-being.

The Opportunity

Many high-achieving students enter the workforce with a success mindset rooted in:

  • Titles and salary

  • Achievement and productivity

  • External validation and approval

While motivating, this “checklist” approach can lead to burnout, pressure, and self-worth tied solely to performance.

Approach

The session blended storytelling, reflection, and practical tools, including:

  • A personal leadership journey highlighting the hidden cost of achievement-driven success

  • Reframing success as something personally defined—not inherited

  • Introducing concepts like stress awareness, nervous system regulation, and boundary setting

  • Guided reflection on values, goals, and personal definitions of success

Participants explored the core idea that
“success is not just about the life you build—it’s about how you feel while building it.”

Impact

Students left with:

  • A broader, more flexible definition of success

  • Tools to manage stress and avoid burnout early in their careers

  • Language and confidence to set boundaries and advocate for themselves

The session encouraged a shift from performance-based worth to inherent self-worth and aligned decision-making.
